Frankie’s flying again!

15 Jun 2011

Frankie Dettori showed his brilliance in the saddle to get Rewilding's head in front when it mattered at the end of a pulsating Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot this afternoon

A fantastic ride from Frankie Dettori saw Rewilding cut down the long odds-on favourite, So You Think, in the final, dramatic drive to the winning post to claim the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the third middle distance race in the QIPCO British Champions Series.

When So You Think, the red-hot 4-11 favourite trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien, surged into the lead with well over a quarter of a mile run in the 1 1/4 mile contest, most people assumed it was a case of “race over”.

The ex-Australian star had never before faced a steep uphill climb to the winning line, however, and the distress signals were out inside the final furlong as his jockey, Ryan Moore, sensed Dettori’s mount appearing on his outside.

For a moment it looked like he might hang on, but the Godolphin-owned Rewilding had previously excelled at a mile and a half and his stamina came tellingly into play at the end of a fast run race.

Timing it to perfection, Frankie got Rewilding in front when it mattered, bringing both himself and trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni their second QIPCO British Champions Series victory following Blue Bunting’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas triumph at Newmarket last month.

Dettori said: "I have to say the second never gave up. It was a tremendous gallop with two great horses"

"When I got past him it was sheer joy. It was sheer joy to be in the race"

"I’m delighted for Rewilding as he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He’s a very good horse and he showed his true colours today"

"They are two great teams (Ballydoyle and Godolphin) and we put our life and soul into the job and into the sport"

"This is what we are here for – to ride these kind of finishes in great races"
