Guide to the 14 runners in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas

5 May 2017

Rhodedendron, the favourite, among three Aidan O'Brien-trained challengers in second Classic of year.

Aidan O’Brien enjoyed a glorious 1-2-3 in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas last year and could repeat the feat on Sunday as he again has three challengers.

Here is a full guide to the £500,000 showpiece, which is the second race in the QIPCO British Champions Series.

CE LA VIE
Trainer
: Keith Dalgleish
Form: 1-7
General odds: 66-1
Won a maiden at Catterick on her only start as a two-year-old. Stepped up on that when seventh in a Group Three at Naas on return this year but faces stiff task.

DABAN
Trainer
: John Gosden
Form: 1-1
General odds: 11-2
Confirmed promise of her debut win at Kempton when landing the Nell Gwyn on her reappearance at Newmarket last month. Extra furlong should not pose a problem and open to more improvement.

DREAM START
Trainer
: John Ryan
Form: 0
General odds: 100-1
Beat only one home in a 1m maiden at Newmarket last mountain and massive surprise if she can make any impact.

FAIR EVA
Trainer
: Roger Charlton
Form: 1132-
General odds: 6-1
Looked exciting when running away with the Group 2 Princess Margaret Stakes over 6f at Ascot last summer but fingers burnt when she fluffed lines at York and Newmarket afterwards. Too early to be writing off the daughter of Frankel.

HYDRANGEA
Trainer
: Aidan O’Brien
Form: 0212220-1
General odds: 12-1
Game winner of a Group 3 event at Leopardstown on her return but was no match for stablemate Rhododendron in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket last autumn over the Guineas course and distance.

INTRICATELY
Trainer
: Joseph O’Brien
Form: 13310-4
General odds: 16-1
Had Hydrangea and Rhododendron behind when winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in September and reappearance fourth behind Hydrangea at Leopardstown, when conceding 3lb, should have put her spot on.

KILMAH
Trainer
: Mark Johnston
Form: 1642719-6
General odds: 40-1
Kept good company as a two-year-old and landed the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood. However, only sixth in the Nell Gwyn on her return and up against it on balance of form.

POET’S VANITY
Trainer
: Andrew Balding
Form: 411-3
General odds: 16-1
Landed the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket in October and ran well when two lengths third to Daban in the Nell Gwyn given she raced a bit keenly and might have needed the run. Extra furlong asks question of her.

QUEEN KINDLY
Trainer
: Richard Fahey
Form: 13114-5
General odds: 25-1
Pick of her two-year-old efforts was when landing the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York (Roly Poly and Fair Eva behind) but not in same form when fourth in Cheveley Park Stakes and never a threat when fifth in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes on her return. Sprinting may prove her forte.

RHODODENDRON
Trainer
: Aidan O’Brien
Form: 21131-
General odds: 2-1
Difficult not to be impressed with the way she thrashed her rivals in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October, having previously won/ran well in pattern company in Ireland. Sets the standard for the others to aim at.

TALAAYEB
Trainer
: Owen Burrows
Form: 1-
General odds: 10-1
Plenty to like about the way she won a 7f maiden on her debut at Newmarket in the autumn. That form has taken a couple of knocks but the time was fair and she delighted connections in a racecourse gallop at the Craven meeting.

UNFORGETABLE FILLY
Trainer
: Hugo Palmer
Form: 2123-2
General odds: 20-1
Solid level of form as a two-year-old and encouraging return when beating all bar Daban in the Nell Gwyn. Entitled to be sharper for that, although on breeding extra furlong not certain to suit.

URBAN FOX
Trainer
: James Tate
Form: : 11443313-2
General odds: 40-1
Tough and consistent two-year-old but limitations seemingly exposed when distant third to Rhododendron in the Fillies’ Mile. Quickly back in groove again when runner-up in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes on return.

WINTER
Trainer
: Aidan O’Brien
Form: 331-2
General odds: 14-1
Grey took three attempts to lose her maiden tag last year but left those efforts behind when edged out by stablemate Hydrangea on her return over 7f at Leopardstown. Distaff side of her pedigree casts some doubt about extra furlong suiting her.
