Starting 2020 as I mean to go on!
6 Jan 2020
So far so good in 2020, as my time in Japan continues to provide me with winners! I had a very strong book of rides to open racing for the New Year in Japan over the weekend. I had two winners on Sunday, and many placings and followed by SIX today with a few placed as well!
I’ve been lucky enough to be riding for some very esteemed trainers whilst out here. This weekend I had four for Almond Eye’s trainer Mr Kunieda – two on Sunday and two today. One for Mr Fujisawa, who trained the great Japanese Derby winner Rey De Oro. I also rode a winner for Mr Koga, Mr Toda, and last years’ Champion Trainer, Mr Yasuda.

I rode some really nice horses, hopefully future Group 1 horses – particularly a horse called Satano Flag, who I’m two from two on now. He’s by Deep Impact and he’s got a big future. Yesterday, I won a Listed race on a horse called Succession. I rode him to finish sixth in a Grade 2 last time, so it was nice to make amends and keep the ride for Mr Kuneida and U Carrot Farm. I hope he’ll continue to progress and maybe he’ll be a Guineas horse, with potentially Satano Flag being a Derby horse. It’s not out of the question, this is the time of year in Japan when those sorts of horses start to step out. I’m really pleased with how it’s going and hopefully I can continue the momentum.
There’s racing three days next week in Japan for me. Nakayama on Saturday, Sunday and Monday so it’ll be very busy but to start my 2020 with so many winners is really pleasing. There’s some satisfaction, but there’s also relief – you’re always trying to maintain the level you’re riding at and it’s nice to know things are going well and hopefully when I get back to Europe in February time – with some time in Dubai incorporated – I can continue my relationship with all of the owners and trainers there, and also continue to keep riding winners!
