My Top 5 2018 Moments

29 Dec 2018

2018 will be known as Oisin Murphy’s ‘breakout’ year, notching up 5 British Group 1’s, 198 domestic wins, a host of International victories and won the hearts of racing fans on 1 very special Lion. Here are his favourite moments from a standout season by our ambassador.

1)  Benbatl in the Dubai Turf

It was very special winning the Dubai Turf on Benbatl because everything went wrong on Super Saturday. He’s a horse that means a lot to me, he’s been a great servant. He gave me my first ever Royal Ascot winner and he won the prep races in Dubai really well, so for him to win the group 1 was unbelievable!

2)  Signora Cabello in the Queen Mary

It was brilliant to reward Pheonix Thoroughbreds for the support they’ve shown me by giving them their first ever Royal Ascot winner. John Quinn had used me a lot when I was an apprentice, so to land a big race for him at the most important meeting of the year was very special.

3)  Lightning Spear in the Qatar Sussex Stakes

Lightning Spear obviously loves Goodwood and everything went right that day. It was great to see the hard work of David Simcock and his team pay off, and for Sheikh Fahad as well in making him a stallion. What a fantastic edition to Tweenhills he’s going to be in 2019.

4)  The Tin Man in the  32Red Sprint Cup

Mr Fanshawe is a wonderful supporter of mine and the owners gave me the opportunity to ride The Tin Man at Haydock. It was my first go on him and to get it right first time was huge. What a lovely horse we have to look forward to again in 2019 and I’m in a very fortunate position.

5)  Roaring Lion

Roaring Lion is a highlight in himself, from the Dante, massive run, to the Derby, showing how good he is in the Eclipse and going on to a scintillating performance in the Juddmonte. He beat a world class field that day, then moving on to Ireland in the Irish Champion Stakes, he overcame adversity and gave me one of the biggest wins of my career. It was great to win on home turf, all my family and friends were there and the reception was just unbelievable. Then trying soft ground and dropping back to a mile in the QEII and I got the opportunity to meet Her Majesty and he stamped himself as Cartier Horse of The Year. What an unbelievable horse to be a part of.
