Arod has proved to be a big-hitter, much like his namesake, baseball star Alex Rodriguez.

The Teofilo colt was purchased for €170,000 by David Redvers for Qatar Racing Limited at the 2012 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. A late bloomer, he didn’t make his racecourse debut until late in his two-year-old season when he could only manage third in a Kempton maiden despite being sent off 7-4 favourite.

He built on his debut with aplomb early in his three-year-old campaign by taking a competitive Windsor maiden with ease.

With big things expected, Peter Chapple-Hyam immediately stepped the exciting colt up in grade to contest the Betfred Dante Stakes at the York May meeting. Arod endured a messy passage and, despite a strong finish, could only manage to finish in the runner-up spot behind the highly progressive The Grey Gatsby.

On the back of that eye-catching effort, he went to Epsom for the Investec Derby, where he arrived as a live outsider. Australia proved a class apart, but Arod ran a cracking race to finish fourth.

Peter Chapple-Hyam found an easier opportunity for him to build on his sole racecourse victory in a conditions race at Leicester and he duly obliged with a facile nine-length success.

Arod was then once again thrown in with the big boys in the Juddmonte International Stakes. Despite being well in the mix with a furlong to go, Jamie Spencer‘s mount just lacked the strong finish of his rivals and could only manage a disappointing fifth.

He looked better than ever in 2015, winning pattern contests at Epsom and Ascot in midsummer. In between, he ran crackers in two Group 1 QIPCO British Champions Series races – finishing third in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes and second in the Qatar Sussex Stakes.

In the latter race, Arod made Solow work hard for his half-length success.

Arod failed to figure when contesting races in Australia at the end of the year and has yet to really spark in 2016, his best effort being when third in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile at Goodwood.
