Unraced as a two-year-old, quickly made up for lost time in 2015.
Having won a maiden at Leopardstown on his debut, in May, Aidan O’Brien pitched him straight into pattern company to contest the Listed King George V Cup, again at Leopardstown, the following month.
He endured a slightly troubled passage but still stayed on well to dead-heat for second.
Bondi Beach followed that with a defeat of Order Of St George, his stablemate, by the narrowest of margins in the Group 3 Curragh Cup and he enhanced his Ladbrokes St Leger claims by chasing home Storm The Stars in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival following a near two-month break.
The St Leger was to prove one of the most controversial and debated races of the year.
Simple Verse edged out by Bondi Beach by a head after a ding-dong battle, during which the pair had twice collided in the final two furlongs.
A stewards’ enquiry was called and the the placings were reversed.
However, 11 days later, after an appeal by the connections of Simple Verse, the decision of the stewards was quashed. Simple Verse was handed back the spoils.
Bondi Beach ended his campaign by finishing down the field in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, though he was only beaten about six lengths.
He got his 2016 campaign off to a smooth start with a win in a 1m4f Listed event at Limerick and followed up with a Group 3 success, at 1-9, against two rivals in the Coolmore Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan.
