Bye Bye Baby rode high at the top of the charts for six weeks in 1975 for The Bay City Rollers and it looked for a while like the equine Bye Bye Baby would also be No 1 in the Investec Oaks at Epsom.

The habitual front-runner kicked clear at halfway and traded at about 2-1 in-running on Betfair but she could not sustain the gallop and had to settle for third behind Forever Together

, her stablemate, and Wild Illusion.

“She likes to bowl away and I was happy for her to do so. But she just wasn’t good enough on the day,” was the honest assessment of jockey Wayne Lordan.

The daughter of Galileo has since finished no closer than fourth in three more Group1 contests.

Before Epsom, Bye Bye Baby had previously made all in the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes at the Curragh, with her exploits as a two-year-old including a Listed wins at Navan.

She acts well on soft or heavy ground, but may be just as effective on a sounder surface.
