Summary

Clever Cookie has been a fine servant for his connections, having competed at the highest level on the Flat and over hurdles.

He won both of his starts in bumpers and despite being beaten on his first two hurdle starts, he won twice at Musselburgh in 2014 before tackling the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr, where he finished second to Cockney Sparrow.

Following that effort his connections decided to switch his attentions to the Flat and he got off the mark at the first attempt in a Doncaster maiden, beating subsequent Group 3 winner Air Pilot. He won his next two starts including a Listed race at York before running well in defeat in both the Ebor and the Doncaster Cup.

In 2015, he recorded a first Group 3 success in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester before following up in the same Listed race at York in May. He then ran in three successive QIPCO British Champions Series races – the QIPCO-sponsored King George at Ascot (finished fifth), the Lonsdale Cup at York (fourth) and Long Distance Cup on Champions Day at Ascot (second).

He did not enjoy the rub of the green in the last-named race and gained deserved compensation when landing the 2016 Betway Yorkshire Cup – the first race in the Long Distance category of the 2016 Series.

Clever Cookie had previously split Mizzou and Flying Officer in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in April.

He was sent off 8-1 for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot but, despite conditions being in his favour, failed to make an impact. He then possibly found the ground when fifth behind Quest For More in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.

Clever Cookie has yet to strike in 2017 but showed he retains all his zest when a fine fourth in the Doncaster Cup on his latest start.
