Brother to the 2013 Investec Oaks third, The Lark, who went on to be successful in Group 2 company.

Unraced at two, he justified favouritism in a Newbury maiden over 11 furlongs on his belated debut in April 2014.

He then started 11-8 favourite for a handicap at Leicester (off a mark of 92), but ran well below expectations, finishing fourth of the seven runners. It later transpired that he had been suffering from a virus.

Given time to recover by trainer John Gosden, he made such a favourable impression during his morning workouts in the lead-up to Royal Ascot that Gosden resisted the handicaps at the meeting and instead pointed him towards the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes.

This attacking policy was vindicated in no uncertain terms when Eagle Top stormed home from the rear of the field to win by more than three lengths.

As a four-year-old, he returned to Ascot over 1m4f on two occasions, finishing second on both occasions, including when going down by a nose to Postponed in the QIPCO-sponsored King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Eagle Top was unable to replicate that form at Newbury next time and was well beaten in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He ran only twice in 2016 and will take up stallion duties at Hedgeholme Stud in Darlington from 2017.
