- Sire-Dam -
Elarqam is one of those thoroughbreds born with an advantage in life.
His sire was the mighty Frankel, won nine QIPCO British Champions Series races and ended his flawless career unbeaten in 14 starts.
And his dam the brilliant Attraction, a brilliantly speedy two-year-old in 2003 who went on to win five Group 1 races over a mile – including the English and Irish versions of the 1000 Guineas.
With Classic-winning parents on both sides of his pedigree, it was perhaps little wonder he fetched 1,600,000gns from Shadwell changed hands for 1,600,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1 yearling sale in October 2016.
Sent to be trained by Mark Johnston (who also trained Attraction), Elarqam won his two starts as a two-year-old, at York and Newmarket, before surrendering his unbeaten record when fourth in the 2018 QIPCO 2000 Guineas behind Saxon Warrior.
The rest of his three-year-old campaign was something of a disappointment but he has shown his true worth this term – winning at Goodwood, Sandown and York (in Group 2 company) before finishing a fine third behind Japan and Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte International Stakes.
Johnston said: “He was obviously very keen early on and he got caught off the bridle a couple out, but he has come back with a vengeance.
“Jim (Crowley) felt had he let him stride on early on then he might’ve won it. Had they come up the middle, as they have done in every race for the last five years, he might have won anyway.
“So it’s frustrating, but it certainly confirms beyond any doubts that he had class, so that’s reassuring.”
Elarqam was then supplemented for the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown but he ran a flat race, beating only one home in the eight-runner line-up.
