History must have been made at Newmarket in the autumn of 2018 when twin sisters with a combined age of 186 were in the winner’s enclosure toasting the Group 1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes victory of Fairyland

Evie Stockwell, 93 at the time, the mother of Coolmore supremo John Magnier, said she had never enjoyed a race more and dreams of landing the QIPCO 1000 Guineas glory back at the Rowley Mile the following May were fuelled.

Lady Mimi Manton, her twin sister, joined in the celebrations plus Evie’s daughter, Anne O’Callaghan, who bred filly. Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the other co-owners, were also present.

Fairyland had previously won the Group 2 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York, also over six furlongs, and the suspicion was that stamina would be a stumbling block in the Guineas.

She ran well to be beaten little more than two lengths into fifth behind Hermosa, her stablemate, at Headquarters but a subdued effort in the Irish version next time convinced her connections that she should revert to sprint distances.

A highly creditable fifth to Blue Point in the King’s Stand Stakes, she then kept on to be third to Ten Sovereigns in the Darley July Cup.

Fairyland also tried her best in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and Betfair Sprint Cup before getting off the mark for the season in the Group 1 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh, when she beat her stablemate So Perfect by a short head.

Mrs Stockwell was again present to join in the celebrations.
