It was a case of so close, yet so far for Housesofparliament in the 2016 Ladbrokes St Leger.
When his stablemate, Idaho, unseated his rider half a mile from home, the way looked clear for him to win and he traded at 1.66 on the betting exchanges.
However, having hit the front, he could not repel Harbour Law or Ventura Storm and he had to settle for a close third in a pulsating finish.
Kevin Buckley, Coolmore’s representative in Britain, believed it might have been a different story had the ground been quicker.
“Housesofparliament ran well – I am not making excuses but the horses are taking the top off the ground and on his last two races at Newmarket and York he has shown that he does appreciate proper good to firm ground,” he said. “That might have blunted him a little bit.”
Housesofparliament had previously finished runner-up to Idaho in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, having earlier won the Group Three Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket (when Harbour Law was fourth).
A stout stayer, he looks one to keep in mind for the Cup races in 2017.
