Which horse provided Joseph O’Brien with his first Group 1 win in Britain?
Years from now it may well be a quiz question, and the answer will be Iridessa via her win in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in 2018.
She looked a Classic contender that day but the following year she had to settle for eighth in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and then fourth in the Irish equivalent.
Iridessa resumed winning way in the Group 1 Juddmonte Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh before going on to scoop the Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.
She then returned to Newmarket to finish third behind Billesdon Brook in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes.
On her latest start she provided O’Brien with another landmark by scooping the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.
In the process, O’Brien, at 26, became the youngest trainer to saddle a Breeders’ Cup winner.
“It’s unbelievable, I’ve always got more of a kick out of training a winner than when riding a winner since I started training,” O’Brien said.
Iridessa is set to stay in training in 2020.
