Stradivarius and Dee Ex Bee dominated the betting for the 2019 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and duly fought out the finish.

Right on their heels, though, beaten a length and a nose, was the unconsidered Master Of Reality.

Sent off at 66/1, Joseph O’Brien’s four-year-old gelding hit the front two furlongs out and went down on his sword.

Wayne Lordan, who rode the son of Frankel, said: “He’s a lovely horse, he likes a bit of juice in the ground, he won a Group 3 at Navan earlier in the year, then found the ground a bit quick for him at Leopardstown, but he has come here and run an outstanding race.

“He is quite a big horse so time on his side over the next few years, and if everything stays sound, he is an improving type. Delighted.”

O’Brien: “It is a great run, it was a great ride, he likes a bit of juice in the ground.”

He was having his tenth run at Ascot, having won three of his previous nine races. He had never previously run in a Group 1 race.

On his latest start he was fifth to Search For A Song in the Comer Group Irish St Leger at the Curragh.
