The six-year-old is apparently not the easiest horse to handle in the yard of Andrew Balding but connections will no doubt forgive him because he has plenty of ability.
He made an instant impact when belatedly having a first run in a QIPCO British Champions Series race, getting up on the line under PJ McDonald to land the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York by a nose from Dartmouth.
He has since failed to reproduce that form but, earlier in the season, had landed the Chester Cup.
Balding was not present for either win but said: “I was very pleased with his win in the Lonsdale Cup. He is more than likely to now go for the Prix du Cadran [at Chantilly on September 30].
“He obviously goes well fresh and we will keep it that way with him.
“He won the Chester Cup off a high enough weight and he deserved his place in the field at York.”
Montaly evidently stays very well and his Group 2 win at York means he has now won five of his 23 races and accumulated £261,000 in prize money.
