Royal Line has been lightly-raced during his first five years, but when he has made it to the track he has always run well.
He did so again when upped to two miles for the first time and finishing third to Kew Gardens and Stradivarius in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup.
The first two home fought out a thriller but Royal Line was next best, albeit finishing five lengths behind them.
“He’s run a great race, but he’s just not in the same class,” John Gosden said.
Royal Line will stay in training next year. And it would be no surprise if he drops back in distance.
He had previously won the Group 3 September Stakes over a mile and a half at Kempton. In total, he has won five of his ten races.
