A typical Sir Mark Prescott-trained improver.

St Michel began 2016 rated 69 and suffered two defeats in 12-furlong handicaps off that mark before being stepped up in distance.

His progress since has been marked and he finished 121211 in handicaps on his next six starts, being sent off at odds-on on five occasions.

St Michel then had his sights raised, with Prescott running him in the 250th Doncaster Cup. He was anything but disgraced in finishing third behind Quest For More and Sheikhzayedroad.

“He ran as well as I hoped,” Prescott said. “Alleluia (2001) was about the same and she won it so he had every reason to be here.

“I will probably run him in the Cesarewitch if he gets in. He would have got in if he had won today but he might not now. Mr [John] Pearce, who owns him is 97 so the more good days he can have the better.”

St Michel did run in the Cesarewitch, but without distinction.

Sadly, Pearce passed away before St Michel resumed action in 2017, but he still carries his colours. On his latest start he confirmed himself as good as ever when being beaten a neck in the Grade 3 Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes.

And on his latest start he finished half a length third in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.
