Meath-born Robbie Colgan is among a number of jockeys who have made a name for themselves over jumps before making a successful switch to the Flat.
Seventeen years after riding his first winner, aboard Flint Knapper for Oliver Brady at Fairyhouse, he came close to tasting success in a British Classic aboard Lady Kaya for Sheila Lavery at Newmarket.
The combination finished runners-up to Hermosa, beaten about a length.
“She’s run a blinder, and done everything her own way,” he said afterwards. “I’m delighted with the run – although had she been beaten a short-head, rather than a length, I might feel differently!
“It was only in the last 100 yards that Wayne [Lordan, jockey of winner Hermosa] had us beaten. I think the filly is very fast – she gets six furlongs and stays seven – so I’m not sure about her running over a mile next time.”
