Brian Ellison was not tall enough to make it in his first choice of career – football – so he became a jump jockey instead.
He retired from the saddle in 1989 to start his training career and since 2000 has been based at his current yard, Spring Cottage Stables in Malton, Yorkshire. For the 2013 season he trained some 75 horses.
By October 2013 he had trained over 700 winners – some 450 on the flat and a further 280 over jumps. His biggest victories both came in 2011 – with Moyenne Corniche in the Ebor Handicap and with Marsh Warbler in the Finale Junior Hurdle. However in 2013 he saddled supplementary entry Top Notch Tonto to finish second in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day, with only Olympic Glory to good for him.
He is married to Claire who is also his racing secretary. She does not allow her husband to step far out of line as she is a black belt in Mixed Martial Arts!
