Appleby has been involved in horseracing for 25 years. Stable jockey to John Manners for three years, riding numerous winners, he then went on to be the head lad for Roger Curtis for a short period before moving to the Andrew Balding stable.
In June 2010 he started to train on his own and in the remainder of that season he had three winners and a couple of placed horses and had showed a profit of £106 to a £1 level stake.
He has since forged a reputation of improving horses from other yards and has enjoyed several big successes, including Demora’s win in the Scottish Sprint Cup and Art Scholar’s victory in the November Handicap.
However his stable star in the last couple of seasons has been Danzeno, who gave the yard a first Group success when winning the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle in 2014. He has also run well on more than one occasion in Group 1 company including when finishing third in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint behind Muhaarar in October 2015.
