Campanelle made it two Royal Ascot wins in as many years by winning the Commonwealth Cup. However, she had to rely on the Steward’s to overturn the result, having been interfered in the run out. The Wesley Ward-trained filly was edged off a racing line by Dragon Symbol and Oisin Murphy, and lost the race by a nose.
The steward’s were called upon and after reviewing the evidence decided that Campanelle would have been the winner had she not been taken off line.
Wesley Ward quipped: “In the US we already would have took our picture and be drinking champagne'”
Campanelle had previously tasted success at the Royal meeting. Winning the Queen Mary Stakes by beating Sacred in 2020. She’s now won four of his last five starts for Wesley Ward. Including wins in France as well as her native US.
