In a category dominated by Stradivarius in recent years, Spanish Mission has managed to accumulate two wins thanks to a gutsy attitude that makes him a horse to be feared in the staying division.

William Buick steered Spanish Mission to his first British Champions Series success in the 2020 Doncaster Cup.

Favourite for the race, he was always travelling comfortably in behind pacesetters The Grand Visir and Celino in the early exchanges. The pace was steady throughout with the field strung out in single file; the heavily backed Revolver sitting in last position under Luke Morris.

William Buick offered Spanish Mission a brief bit of encouragement that saw Andrew Balding‘s charge comfortably head Celino. He then began to assert his advantage and by the final furlong the race was all but won. Celino kept on gamely to finish 2nd under Cieron Fallon jnr.

Spanish Mission cemented his credentials as a candidate for staying races going forwards by following up in the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup at York in 2021 – again steered by William Buick. He had somewhat slipped under the radar that day with two Mark Johnston horses well fancied. He settled well early and ultimately covered his two closest rivals comfortably.
