Ballydoyle are famous for breeding their own horses, but the purse strings were stretched for St Mark’s Basilica to the measure of £1.3 million – that hefty investment now seems justified.
Like so many good Aidan O’Brien horses before him, St Mark’s Basilica rounded out a mixed two-year-old career with a winning run in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
Many thought he would be set for an English Classic campaign, but it was to be France where the three-year-old was sent first. It would prove to be the right decision, as the colt ran out a ready winner in both the French 2000 Guineas and French Derby.
A return to British soil soon followed, and a trip to Sandown Park for Coral-Eclipse. Faced with older and more experienced rivals in a small field of four, he really showed his class and put that field to bed with ease, notching his first Series win, under Ryan Moore.
